As a former student residence and studio saved from demolition by a last-gasp art exhibition, Hagiso reopened in 2013 as a small-scale cultural complex for the Yanaka community.
Retaining elements of the building’s original wooden structure, the renovated two-storey complex is now home to a cafe, art space and hotel reception.
Providing a comfortable setting for a casual meal, the cafe starts the day with a seasonal breakfast set, serves sweets and light dishes through the afternoon, and rolls out an internationally-inspired menu after dark.
The adjacent art space and guest-curated playlists provide the sights and sounds to complement your meal, while events and performances often permeate throughout the building.
Tucked away upstairs is the reception for the neighbourhood-focused hotel project Hanare, which is perfectly suited to those who can’t bear to part ways with this endearing community.
