“Take a journey through Harajuku, Ginza, Okachimachi, Asakusa and Shinjuku, each area with its own vibrant mix of culture, cuisine and characters”
Produced for global retailer Uniqlo, Monocle’s mini guide to Tokyo shines a light on cultural destinations found in the areas surrounding four of the brand’s key inner-city retail locations. As one of the writers I authored introductions to a wide range of places, among them longstanding establishments and independent businesses that bring colour and flavour to their neighbourhoods. Highlights from the lineup included lemon-sour specialist The Open Book and century-old art shop Gekkoso, along with classic restaurants serving staples such as yakitori and tonkatsu.
Initially published in Monocle’s Japan-themed Issue 129, the guide was later expanded and included in the second issue of LifeWear, Uniqlo’s in-house magazine.
